Bon Voyage! Funny Travelling Stories & Your 9 Travel Must Haves.

As much as we all love a trip away, sometimes travelling isn’t all plain sailing! From travel mishaps to packing stresses, no matter how much planning you put in, there are always a million and one things that can go wrong on trip.

While travel mishaps are never fun in the moment, they do make for some great stories. Here are three of our favourites…

  • The men who met his doppelganger on a flight.

They say everyone has a doppelganger somewhere out there, but what exactly are the chances of meeting yours? Much less, what are the chances of being sat next to them on a plane?! Well, that’s exactly what happened to two holiday-goers in 2015, and the photo shared of the strangely alike men quickly became a viral sensation.

Yep, those two men are total strangers. Our minds are blown. To make matters even weirder, once they’d taken their selfie and landed, both men just happened to check into the same hotel! One half of the duo, Neil Thomas Douglas, said “Later that night, I went to the pub and again, there was my twin. Total weirdness. We had a laugh and a pint.”.

We think both men need a serious discussion with their parents, because we’re definitely getting long lost twin /  ‘The Parent Trap’ vibes!

  • The man who took a stranger on a trip around the world.

In 2014 Canadian Jordan Axani booked the trip of a lifetime for himself and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Gallagher, travelling around the world during an epic three week venture. There was only one problem – after booking the flights, Axani and Gallagher ended their relationship.

Not wanting the flights to go to waste, Axani took a rather risky approach – he posted an ad online to find a new travelling partner. The catch? As the cost of changing details on the tickets was too high, they had to hold a Canadian passport, and be named Elizabeth Gallagher.

Axani’s original plea, posted on Reddit, read:

“’I need your help. You see, in March I booked a fairly wicked trip around the world for this Christmas for my ex and I. While our relationship has come to a close, I am still planning on going on the trip and she is not (naturally). And because I hate the idea of a ticket around the world going to waste, I am looking for a Canadian named Elizabeth Gallagher who could use the ticket.”

He continued his request, making it clear he was looking for nothing in return for the tickets. He even went as far as to say the lucky recipient could take the flight tickets and go her own way if she wished. Axani received 1000s of responses, and eventually chose a 23 year old student and administrator named Elizabeth ‘Quinn’ Gallagher.

Naturally, the story blew up! Axani had stopped planning the trips beyond booking the flights, due to his break up. When Marriott International heard about the new found friends planned trip they stepped up, offering to provide Axani and Gallagher with separate rooms for each stop on their journey. In December 2014 the trip began, and Elizabeth Gallagher found herself exploring New York, Milan, Venice, Prague, New Delhi, Khao Lak and Hong Kong for free – all because of her name!

  • The accidental vlogger.

Irishman Joseph Griffin took a trip to Las Vegas in 2015, and the video he filmed of his holiday has since been named ‘the most dad thing on the internet’. You see, Joseph wanted to document his trip, so his son, Evan, generously lent his dad his GoPro camera. Evan however evidently didn’t leave instructions, resulting in the hilarious video below.

Yep, Griffin filmed his whole trip in selfie mode! The 4 minute video shows him walking the strip, pointing out the beautiful views and showing off all the attractions of the city – all while the viewers were treated to a close up of his baffled expression!

When Joseph returned the GoPro to his son and Evan realised his dad’s mistake, he did what any good son would do – uploaded the video to YouTube! The video was such a hit that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority invited both father and son back to Vegas, offering them full VIP treatment. GoPro even got involved, gifting Joseph a two way GoPro camera to ensure that, this time, nothing was missed!

Our 9 Must Have Travel Items

As much as we all love jetting off on our jollies, there are always downsides to travelling. Long delays, claustrophobic flights, busy airports… Can someone just invent a teleporter already?!

Getting to your destination is the hard part, which is why we’ve put together a small selection of our travel must haves, to make your journey just that little bit more bearable.

  • Lip Balm.

If you’ve ever flown, you know just how much it dries out your skin. While we’re all clued up on keeping our face moisturised, it’s vital not to forget about your lips too! Sun can also lead to dry, flaky and generally unpleasant lips, so keep your pout perfected at all times with the Mad Beauty Kellogg’s Vintage Blueberry Pop Tart Lip Balm.

  • Sleep Mask.

Catching 40 winks in public can be difficult at the best of times. There’s noise, light, and of course the worry of exposing your rather attractive open mouthed sleep face to everyone around you! The Accoutrements & Friends Zombie Eyes Undead Sleep Mask is the ideal solution, blocking out light and allowing you to fall asleep comfortably. Best of all, if you do enter the dreaded drooling mouth-open sleep state, it will only add to the hilarious zombie effect!

  • Makeup Bag.

While most of us tone down the makeup for our holidays (mascara and the sea generally don’t mix well!), there are of course some essentials that every girl wants to keep close to hand at all times. For a flight in particular, moisturisers, tissues and wipes are a must have! Opt for the Mad Beauty Kellogg’s 50s Pink Vintage Makeup Bag to keep all your necessary beauty goodies organised on your travels.

  • Luggage Tag.

We’ve all been there. You’re in the airport, waiting in arrivals for your luggage to come round the carousel. You see your suitcase… but wait – there’s another identical one right behind it, then another right behind that! The fear of somebody else accidentally taking your precious luggage is all too real, so make sure your suitcase is instantly recognisable with this Sass and Belle Tropical Pineapple Luggage Tag. You’ll know straight away which bag is yours, and the fun pineapple print is sure to put an instant smile on your face.

  • Passport Holder.

We loved this funky pineapple print so much that we just had to include the Sass and Belle Tropical Pineapple Passport Holder. The pretty, colourful style will get you straight in the holiday spirit, and will keep your passport protected and easy to find in your bag.

  • Earphones.

Flights are noisy places. From rowdy holiday goers to screaming babies, it can all get a little bit too much at times. However, it’s nothing that can’t be blocked out by a little music! Headphones or earphones are an absolute holiday essential, from keeping you calm on the flight to listening to your fave tunes around the pool. We’re absolutely head over heels with the Fred & Friends Owl Sugary Pink Earbuds – they’re totally different, and totally adorable!

  • Tissues.

Tissues on a trip are a no-brainer – you never know when they’re gonna come in handy! From spills and cleanups to emergency toilet paper, be prepared for anything with the Happy Jackson A-Tishoos! Pocket Tissues.

  • Hand Gel.

There’s something about travelling that just makes us feel a little bit icky. On holiday too, with all the pools, sea and sand, we’re likely to constantly have some kind of grimy build up of chlorine and salt on our skin. Keep your hands cleansed and refreshed at all times with this Happy Jackson Good Girls Hand Sanitiser. It’s the perfect size for carry-on, and the zingy cucumber and mint scent is perfect for waking you up after a long journey!

  • Mirror.

Whether for applying a touch of makeup, or simply checking the state of your skin and eye bags after a long flight, a compact mirror is a must have in any travel arsenal. The Disaster Designs Love Letters Compact Mirror is a firm favourite of ours, with its stunning vintage design and handy magnifying section.
